Lesson LXIX - Perfect Middle System of Vowel and of Mute Verbs

S643. Conjugate the perfect middle system of λύω, loose, in 769, λείπω, leave, in 775, ἄγω, lead, in 776, and πειθω, persuade, in 777.

Give the synopsis of each verb, first of its perfect and pluperfect, then of its future perfect.

ἀποσπάω, draw off, separate.
ἐκπλήττω, strike out of ones senses, terrify.
θωρᾱκίζω (θωρακιδ), ἐθωράκισα, τεθωράκισμαι, ἐθωρᾱκίσθην, (compare θώρᾱξ), arm with a corselet.
μάντις, εως, ὁ, seer, diviner.
μιμνῃσκω (μνα), μνησω, ἐμνησα, μεμνημαι, ἐμνησθην, remind; middle and passive, remember, with perfect as present.
ὀρύττω (ὀρυχ), ὀρύξω, ὤρυξα, ὀρώρυχα,ὀρώρυγμαι, ὠρύχθην, dig.
παρατάττω, draw up side by side, draw up in line of battle.
πλήττω (πληγ, πλαγ), πλήξω, ἔπληξα, πέπληγα, πέπληγμαι, ἐπλήγην and ἐπλάγην, strike, hit.
ὑπολείπω, leave behind.
χρῡσίον, ου, τό, (compare χρῡσοῦς), piece of gold, gold.

1. οἱ Ἕλληνες ἐγγύς τέ εἰσι καὶ παρατεταγμένοι.

2. διέσπαστο γὰρ τὰ στρατεύματα.

3. ἐπύθετο δὲ τάφρον ὀρωρυγμένην διὰ τοῦ πεδίου.

4. τῷ δὲ ἀνδρὶ τούτῳ ἡδέως πέπεισμαι.
ἀνδρὶ The dative follows πειθομαι (860).

5. Κῦρον δὲ φᾱσι τῷ μάντει ὑπεσχῆσθαι χρῡσίον πολύ.

6. εἵποντο δὲ καὶ ἄλλοι τῶν Περσῶν τεθωρᾱκισμένοι εἰς τριᾱκοσίους.
εἰς to the number of.

7. πολλάκις γὰρ ἐν νυκτὶ πορεόμεος ἀπέσπασμαι ἀπὸ τῶν πεξῶν.

8. πόσοι τῶν ανδαπόδων ὑπολελείψονται

9. καὶ ὄστις ὑμῶν βούλεται οἴκαδε ἀπελθεῖν, μεμνήσθω ἀνήρ ἀγαθὸς εἶναι.

10. ἤλαυνεν ἐπὶ τοὺς Μένωνος στρατιώτᾱς, ὥστ᾽ ἐκείνους ἐκπεπλῆχθαι καὶ τρέχειν ἐπὶ τὰ ὅπλα.
ἐκπεπλῆχθαι Perfect (instead of present) infinitive, for emphasis, were thoroughly frightened.

1. I had been shot through my corselet.
2. The army will have been cut to pieces.
3. He says that the Greeks have obeyed their commanders in all (particulars).
παντα (834).
4. All had often urged Cyrus not to fight.
5. Cyrus and his horsemen had been armed with corselets.

S647. Silanus the Soothsayer is rewarded
ταύτην δη τὴν πάροδον Κῦρος τε καὶ ἡ στρατιὰ παρῆλθε καὶ
ἐγένοντο εἰσω τῆς τάφρου. ταύτῃ μὲν οὖν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ οὐκ
ἐμαχέσατο βασιλεύς. ἐνταῦθα Kῦρος Σῑλᾱνὸν καλέσᾱς τὸν
μάντιν ἔδωκεν δᾱρεικοὺς τρισχῑλίους, ὅτι τῇ ἑνδεκάτῃ ἀπ᾽
ἡμέρᾳ προθῡόμενος εἶπεν αὐτῳ ὅτι βασιλεύς οὐ
μαχεῖται δέκα ἡμερῶν, Kῦρος δ᾽ εἶπεν, "Ὀυκ ἄρα ἔτι μαχεῖται,
εἰ ἐν ταύταις οὐ μαχεῖται ταῖς ἠμέραις. ἐὰν δ᾽ ἀληθεύσῃς,
ὑπισχνοῦμαι σοι δέκα τάλαντα." τοῦτο τό χρῡσίον τότε ἔδωκεν,
ἐπεὶ παρῆλθον αἱ δέκα ἠμέραι.

ἔδωκεν: gave (him).
ἀπ᾽ ἐκείνης: ie. before that (day).
ὅτι: because.
ἡμερῶν: the time within which, but ἡμέρᾳ preceding, the time when.
οὐκ ἄρα ἔτι μαχεῖται: he will not fight then at all.
ἀληθεύσῃς: shall prove to be speaking the truth.
